The Better Business Bureau has issued a nationwide warning to alert consumers to an ongoing scam. Consumers have been contacted by telephone, fliers, social media, text messages, and even in person with claims that President Obama is providing credits or applying payments to utility bills. The scammers ask consumers to provide their Social Security Numbers as well as bank routing and account numbers. In exchange, consumers are given fraudulent bank account information to use to pay their utility bills.
Though the payment with the fake information is initially accepted, it is declined after a few days. The bill is not paid (and late fees may accrue) and the consumer’s personal information has been compromised.
Thousands across the country have already fallen victim to this scheme. It has proven especially effective due to its convincing nature and the fact that the heat wave has caused especially high utility bills.
