Rural Power is the advocacy hub for Iowa’s electric cooperatives. It supports and spotlights grassroots activities of cooperative managers, board members, employees, retirees, Youth Tour participants, and member-consumers. Grassroots advocacy efforts include activities that impact public policy in a manner that results in safe, affordable, reliable electricity delivered in an environmentally responsible manner.
Rural Power evolved out of the successful presidential caucus project launched in 2011 and remains vital as an engagement platform for a wide range of grassroots advocacy intended to impact public policy at both the state and national level.
Iowa’s electric cooperatives will once again be promoting their values and principles with candidates in the upcoming elections. This fall, representatives from Iowa RECs will attend events for congressional candidates and ask them questions of interest to member-consumers. This service project for members will continue throughout the next couple of years for the presidential election.
Iowa’s electric cooperatives know that affordable electricity is a fundamental aspect of any economic environment that fosters future growth and stability. This is why employees and member-consumers of electric cooperatives are making sure to share their perspectives with policymakers and potential presidential candidates.
With Iowa’s population shifting to urban and suburban areas, it is more important than ever that the voices of rural Iowa remain strong and vigilant. Policymakers must understand how proposed energy policies will uniquely affect the future economic wellbeing of Iowa’s rural economies.
You can help your electric cooperative in this effort by continuing the discussion with friends, family, and elected officials. Check out Rural Power activities at www.facebook.com/iaruralpower and iaruralpower.org.
