September was a busy month for East-Central Iowa REC. Representatives from the Cooperative travelled to Minneapolis to share experiences and discuss issues with other cooperatives, then to Washington, D.C., to engage congressional delegates in current concerns of cooperative members.
Regional Meeting brings together cooperatives from across Midwest
More than 1,000 rural electric cooperative officials from 169 cooperatives in the Midwest met in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on September 11-12, at a regional meeting hosted by the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA). Cooperatives shared experiences and discussed issues faced as they work to keep electricity safe, reliable, and affordable. Topics included environmental regulation, energy efficiency, renewable energy, cybersecurity, and leadership transition
The meeting was attended by ECI REC CEO Steve Marlow, and directors Jim Alberts, Don Shonka, Lloyd Bathen, Jeff Elliott, and Chris Sackett. “We always look forward to sharing ideas and to helping our fellow cooperatives face current challenges at the regional meeting,” said Marlow. “It is also a great opportunity for us to find new ways to better serve our members.”

Iowa RECs focus on disaster aid denial during Fall Fly-In
Representatives of Iowa’s electric cooperatives travelled to Washington, D.C., on September 17 to meet with the Iowa Congressional delegation. Steve Marlow, CEO of ECI REC, joined 35 representatives from Iowa’s electric cooperatives in taking concerns to the Capitol. The two main goals of the visit were:
- To ask the Iowa Congressional delegation to formally engage the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) on their recent decision to deny federal disaster aid to Iowa electric cooperatives.
- To ask Senator Grassley to co-sponsor S. 1302, the Cooperative and Small Employer Charity Pension Flexibility Act of 2013, which supports pension funding relief for charities and rural cooperatives.
“I am happy to report that we succeeded on both counts,” said Tim Coonan, REC lobbyist.
