In recent years, many consumers have gotten federal rebates for a new fridge, water heater, or other household appliance. The U.S. Department of Energy estimates these appliances will cut $65 million from electric bills every year.
Great news, right? Sure, if people really follow the adage, “Out with the old, in with the new.” But for one in five households, that’s not the case. A national survey by the Cooperative Research Network, an arm of the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association, found 19% of homes have two refrigerators; 2% own three or more.
The problem with keeping an old refrigerator is simple: You’re not saving money. By sending these “energy hogs” to the basement or garage you jack up electric bills even more.
Appliances already use 13% of your home’s electricity, and older appliances drain even more. A refrigerator from the 1970s costs $200 more to operate every year than a current model; a 1980s fridge isn’t much better, wasting $100 in energy dollars annually.
At ECI REC, we’ll give you rebate of $25 on your new ENERGY STAR refrigerator. Then, take advantage of the Pull the Plug program
we offer in partnership with Environmental Services of Iowa (ESI) and follow through with recycling your old refrigerator. You’ll add another $35 rebate for the old fridge.
How do I Pull the Plug?
All you have to do is contact ECI REC and request collection of operable refrigerators, freezers, and window air conditioners. ESI will contact you to verify the information and schedule a pick-up date for the eligible appliance(s). Then, ESI will issue and mail you an incentive check for each eligible appliance collected. Refrigerators earn $35; window air conditioners and freezers earn $25.
