ECI REC 2012 Youth Tour alum Dalton Schmit had the opportunity on Saturday to attend the Iowa Democratic Party’s annual Jefferson Jackson Dinner. The event focused not only on the presidential election, but also on local candidates and issues the party believes are important to Iowa voters.
Schmit’s attendance at the event was sponsored by the Iowa Electric Cooperative Association (IAEC). IAEC Government Relations Director Tim Coonan introduced the pair to Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack, Senator Tom Harkin, Congressman Bruce Braley, and congressional candidate Christie Vilsack, among many others. Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa was the keynote speaker for the event.
Since attending the 2012 Youth Tour in June, Schmit has remained dedicated to involvement in the political arena. “We are thrilled that the Youth Tour program has led to greater opportunities for Dalton. It’s our goal to cultivate leadership characteristics and community involvement in our young Cooperative members,” said ECI REC Youth Tour Coordinator Greg Pavelka. Schmit, a senior at Jesup High School, is the son of ECI REC members Chris and Rachel Weber from the Independence area.
