    Avoid Peak Hours

last modified: September 10, 2015 at 11:32:25 AM

Electricity demand peaks from 4:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on weekdays. It’s tough to ask members to cut back during this time—you’re home from work, starting dinner, watching television, and doing laundry. However, 45% of the ECI REC wholesale power bill is related to the demand you create during this time. ECI REC could pay up to $15.31 per kilowatt (kW) for the power we draw during peak hours. When you choose to delay using electricity from 4:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., you can help your Cooperative save a great deal of money.

Here’s how you can help during peak hours:

    • Shift household chores and activities away from peak periods. Wait to run your dishwasher until you go to bed, for instance.
    • Use the most energy-efficient appliances you have. Your microwave oven, for example, uses considerably less energy than your stove or cook-top.
    • Look for ENERGY STAR® labels if you’re buying a new appliance. You can be assured you are getting a highly efficient machine.
    • Be aware of your energy consumption. Try to get in the habit of using energy efficiently year-round.

Use the energy you need, but use it wisely! You’ll help your Co-op avoid building expensive new power plants—and that, in turn, will help keep your electric rates stable.
